Chicken Salad Lettuce Wraps

Image
Looking for an easy, light lunch to make during the week! Look no further! These Chicken Salad Lettuce Wraps are my favorite quick & healthy lunch! Made with canned chicken, olive oil mayo, grapes, cucumbers, carrots and romaine lettuce. These wraps are super low carb and totally delicious! Make it with me. Growing up (and even still today) I lived on Chicken Salad! It was my very favorite flavor of sandwich! I always took them in my sack lunch to school. I was raised on canned chicken, so I've never looked at it as weird. I know some people are timid when it comes to canned chicken but you shouldn't be!  It's a great, easy source of protein! I have to dedicate this recipe to my little cousin Oakley. She is 7 and she has so much personality. She catches on very quick and is very aware of the world around her. One day, I asked her what she wanted for lunch. She told me that she doesn't eat Carbs. I had to laugh because I'm sure she's heard ...

humanOS Year in Review (Part 2 of 3): Hot Topics in Nutrition in 2018

Image
In the last blog we began by reviewing how humanOS evolved in 2018. We ended by focusing on what we learned in 2018 about the science of aging. In this post we turn our attention primarily to new developments in the science of nutrition, picking up where we left off as we consider how diet affects aging.    Diet and aging: prebiotics, probiotics, and protein How diet affects how we age has received a lot of airtime this year. Because humans live for so long and aren’t very good at sticking to lifestyle interventions, most research on diet and longevity has been done on other animals. Dan discussed one of these studies with Susan Westfall , who found that fruit flies that consumed an Ayurvedic supplement plus certain probiotics lived dramatically longer than other flies. Such preclinical studies are very interesting and can pave the way for research on humans, but we should always be wary of assuming that it’s possible to use other organisms to model how humans respond ...

Sausage Gravy with Eggy Biscuits

Image
During the winter months I am all about comfort food! This biscuits and gravy is a tasty take on traditional biscuits and gravy but it’s dairy optional and gluten free!  I spent ten years of my childhood and young adult years in Texas. Biscuits and Gravy are a breakfast staple in the south and something my family has always enjoyed. When we went gluten and dairy free I had to make a few tweaks but we can still enjoy the breakfast that we love now with healthier ingredients!  {This post may contain affiliate links} Sausage Gravy with Eggy Biscuits Serves 4 to 6 Gravy 1 pound ground pork sausage 2 1/2 cups hemp milk  1/4 cup buckwheat flour 1/2 teaspoon fine ground sea salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Biscuits 1 cup old fashioned oats 2 large eggs 1 tablespoon hemp milk  1 tablespoon grass-fed butter or ghee 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon fine ground sea salt 1. Writing a To-Do List Might Help You Fall Asleep Faster

Image
From time to time I struggle to fall asleep. Sometimes this is because of something to do with my sleep environment. Maybe it’s too hot or cold , for example. At other times I’ve eaten too much, too late. And now and then it’s because it’s Saturday night and I’ve been reckless and had too much booze and caffeine… again. However, most of the time my difficulties falling asleep arise from rumination on something related to work. And it turns out that I’m not alone. About 26% of US adults struggle to fall asleep at least a few times each week , and preoccupation with worries may be a key contributor to this difficulty. When we don’t get as much work done as we intend, many of us cogitate over our perceived shortcomings . This deliberation can disrupt sleep, especially among people who expect a lot from themselves . Now, I’d known that during therapy to help them sleep, people afflicted with insomnia are often advised to write lists of their sleep-related concerns. The premise is that i...
