Chicken Salad Lettuce Wraps

Image
Looking for an easy, light lunch to make during the week! Look no further! These Chicken Salad Lettuce Wraps are my favorite quick & healthy lunch! Made with canned chicken, olive oil mayo, grapes, cucumbers, carrots and romaine lettuce. These wraps are super low carb and totally delicious! Make it with me. Growing up (and even still today) I lived on Chicken Salad! It was my very favorite flavor of sandwich! I always took them in my sack lunch to school. I was raised on canned chicken, so I've never looked at it as weird. I know some people are timid when it comes to canned chicken but you shouldn't be!  It's a great, easy source of protein! I have to dedicate this recipe to my little cousin Oakley. She is 7 and she has so much personality. She catches on very quick and is very aware of the world around her. One day, I asked her what she wanted for lunch. She told me that she doesn't eat Carbs. I had to laugh because I'm sure she's heard ...

Sleep and Immunity – Things to Know

Image
Thousands of years ago, Hippocrates suggested that sleep appeared to improve recovery from illness. Yet despite this ancient observation, it is only quite recently that the link between sleep and our immune system has been elucidated. Much of our knowledge of the importance of sleep for health emanates from studies examining the effects of sleep loss, and they are compelling. We see that lack of sleep is linked to a whole array of issues: mood disturbances , overeating and weight gain , reduced insulin sensitivity , cardiovascular disease , and many other maladies.  Interestingly, it is also linked to increased susceptibility to respiratory infection – a health concern that is at the forefront of our minds more now than perhaps ever before. Sleep and Risk for the Common Cold One study put this link to the test in a very direct way. They recruited 153 healthy volunteers, and had them report their sleep duration and sleep efficiency (percent of time spent in bed when the...

Novel Light Intervention to Fight Social Jet Lag in Teens. Podcast with Dr. Jamie Zeitzer

Image
Over the past few decades, sleep duration appears to have been declining for most people living in industrialized countries. But one group for whom this is particularly evident is teenagers . Nearly half of adolescents in the US report insufficient sleep, and suffer from daytime sleepiness on school days. One study of middle school and high-school students found that a whopping 80% slept fewer than 8 hours on school nights, and 33% of the students reported falling asleep in class.  This is not as trivial as it may seem. Teenagers who don’t get enough sleep have poorer academic performance , are more likely to develop psychological problems like depression, are at higher risk of medical issues like obesity and diabetes, and are more likely to be involved in car accidents . The long term implications of insufficient sleep with respect to health, education, and achievement early in life should not be underestimated. So why is this such a pervasive problem? One factor that...
